Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil) are the most common drugs used to treat erectile disfunction among men. These are generally oral medications and are quite similar but differ in their reaction time, side effects etc. Viagra and Cialis are both PDE-5 inhibitors and function by obstructing phosphodiesterase type 5 and boosts nitric oxide in body. This results in prolonged erection due to increased blood flood through the relaxed muscles. However, while Viagra’s presence in system lasts for four to six hours, Cialis is recorded to be present in system for about seventeen to eighteen hours.
Both are suitable to be stored in room temperature. Effect of food prior or later to consumption of either doesn’t have any difference in performance. However, both has potential side effects and both have a potential for misuse.
Cost and availability
Viagra and Cialis are both available at almost all pharmacies. Cost is also almost similar. However, costs of either are generally not covered by health insurance except in cases of certain medical conditions when prior authorization is given.
Side effects of both Viagra and Cialis have been well recorded medically. Headache, stuffy or runny nose, upset stomach, priapism, sudden cardiac arrest (myocardial infarction) and death (rare cases) have been recorded as the side effects of both Viagra and Cialis. However certain other side effects have been recorded specifically in case of Viagra like changes in vision (visual impairment) and flushing while Cialis have certain rare additional side effects like muscle pain, back pain and spasms. It is thus strictly advised to consult a certified physician before administering either of the medicines. Self-administration of either is strictly advised against as it may lead to ill effects which may bring about irrevocable medical changes or permanent damages to the body.
Both Viagra and Cialis have chances of interaction as both belong to the same class of drugs (PDE-5 inhibitor) and their functioning procedure is quite similar. Both the drugs interact with alpha blockers (high pressure medication) and nitrates. Additionally Viagra also interacts with amlodipine and ritonavir while Cialis interacts with bendrofluazine, enalapril, metoprolol and alcohol. Moreover, the combination of Cialis and alcohol is seriously dangerous and might cause headache or dizziness.
Dosage of Cialis varies between 5 mg to 20 mg. However, 10 mg is considered to be standard dosage.
Both are to be taken on the basis of one’s need. Recommended dosage for daily use of Cialis is 2.5 mg normally but can be increased to 5 mg for patients with BPH. Maximum dosage frequency should not be more than once a day. Timing of dosage shouldn’t be a concern except in case of patients with BPH, for whom, it is advised to stick to the same time of the day.
Dosage of Viagra varies between 25 to 100 mg. Standard dosage is 50 mg but may be reduced or increased depending on one’s tolerance and other medical factors. Dosing frequency should not exceed once a day. Effect of Viagra lasts for about 4 hours approximately.
