Our children are our future. They are the inheritors of the earth tomorrow. In fact it is also said that we have borrowed the earth from our children and hence it is our job to return it in a better condition. But are we doing the things right? Look at the pollution and the other manmade disasters like de forestation etc around the world and we cannot definitely say that we are leaving behind a better world for tomorrow’s generation.
Come to think of it, what about our society and the quality of our lives. No doubt materialistically we are doing very well and unquestionably we will be leaving behind a very sophisticated material civilization as inheritance. Technology and sciences have made progress by leaps and bounds to transport us into higher ages. However on the individual front is man making progress in his evolution?. This is of course a very subjective question but when you look at the society in general you see that morally and ethically we seem to be going the other way.
Look at the rate of divorces, of broken homes as well as the moral and sexual life of people today. Everybody seems to believe in pursuing his or her personal goals and priorities at the cost of their responsibilities towards family , children and home etc. Sex has become a biological drive that men and women tend to satisfy with anybody without any emotional engagement. Breaking up of relationships and calling off of marriage has become a common occurrence. People have not begun to experiment more and more with different sexual orientation. Do these auger well for our children and their future? Not at all. The drop in moral and ethical standards in the society and the increase of sexual freedom and experiments is detrimental to the wellbeing of children in terms of their emotional health and their value systems.
One of the areas that needs to be focused in all countries with reference to the education of the youth is to introduce and emphasize on sexual health management programs. Today’s sex education that is conducted by the schools is not adequate and is perhaps at an elementary level. The need of the children of today has changed. Children today have access to all kinds of information regarding sex through internet and other means and such information may or may not be useful or correct. Most often the children are likely to get exposed to negative sexual relationships.
Sexual health education for children is the need of the hour in all societies. We need policies as well as identified and tailor made programs to educate children and train them in building the right attitude, right ideas as well as the right awareness about sexual relationships and their well being. This would need to be supported by the Governmental policies as well as legislation and involve the mainstream education channels for implementation. Sexual health and wellbeing of children does not stop with providing them with the information but needs to involve and provide for sexual health services and counseling centers too.
Improving the sexual health and moral health of the children apart from protecting our environment and leaving behind a cleaner and purer earth for the next generation is the least that we can do.
